The vortex finder is the cylindrical overflow pipe extending downward from the top of the hydrocyclone cylinder. Its primary function is to prevent short-circuit flow—feed slurry that would otherwise bypass separation and exit directly through the overflow without participating in the centrifugal classification process . ⚙️ The vortex finder diameter (often expressed as a ratio of the cylinder diameter D2) is one of the most critical design parameters affecting separation performance. How diameter affects performance: Increasing the vortex finder diameter reduces pressure drop and energy consumption, but also decreases tangential velocity within the cyclone—which weakens the centrifugal force that drives coarse particles to the wall. This results in more coarse particles reporting to the overflow, reducing classification accuracy . Conversely, a smaller vortex finder diameter increases tangential velocity and improves coarse particle rejection, but at the cost of higher pressure drop and reduced overflow capacity. Short-circuit flow is a major concern: with larger vortex finder diameters, the velocity vector becomes turbulent and short-circuit flow increases, meaning more feed material exits through the overflow without proper separation . Practical guidance: For fine classification duties (d50 < 30 μm), a vortex finder diameter of 0.26–0.38 D2 is typically recommended. For coarser separations, larger diameters (0.44–0.56 D2) may be acceptable. The optimal diameter balances cut size requirements, capacity, and energy consumption. Always consult manufacturer performance curves specific to your application.
