High-Efficiency Centrifugal Gravity Concentrator for Gold and Heavy Mineral Recovery

The Centrifugal Gold Concentrator is an enhanced gravity separation machine designed to recover free gold and other high-density minerals from mineral processing streams. Also commonly described as a Centrifugal Gravity Concentrator, Gold Centrifuge, Centrifugal Gold Bowl or High-G Gravity Concentrator, the equipment combines centrifugal force with controlled fluidization water to improve the recovery of fine and liberated heavy minerals.

The operating principle is similar to the enhanced-gravity technology widely used in Knelson-type and Falcon-type concentrators, making this equipment a practical solution for mineral processing plants looking for high-efficiency gravity separation without chemical reagents.

During operation, slurry enters the rotating bowl or cone. The high-speed rotation generates a strong centrifugal field that drives solids toward the bowl wall. Heavy particles such as free gold, silver and other high-density minerals migrate into the riffled concentration zone, while lighter gangue particles are carried upward and discharged with the tailings. Pressurized fluidization water enters through dedicated ports to maintain a loose mineral bed, allowing heavy particles to penetrate and remain trapped while reducing the retention of lighter material. This operating principle is well established in modern centrifugal gravity concentration.

Designed for Fine Gold and Heavy Mineral Recovery

Traditional gravity equipment such as sluice boxes, jigs and shaking tables can become less effective when valuable minerals are present as very fine liberated particles. A centrifugal concentrator increases the effective gravitational field and therefore provides stronger separation forces than conventional gravity equipment.

Depending on bowl design, operating conditions and mineral characteristics, enhanced gravity concentrators can be applied to fine gold as well as other heavy minerals. Commercial Falcon systems, for example, are used for gold, silver, platinum-group metals, tin, tantalum, tungsten, chrome, cobalt and other minerals.

For gold processing, the equipment can be used as a fine gold recovery centrifuge, primary gravity concentrator, scavenging unit or pre-concentration machine. It is particularly suitable where the feed contains liberated or partially liberated heavy minerals that can be separated by density.

Main Applications

1. Alluvial and Placer Gold Recovery

The centrifugal gold concentrator can be installed in alluvial gold washing plants to recover fine gold that may otherwise escape from conventional screening and gravity circuits. It can work with trommel screens, scrubbers, vibrating screens, pumps and classification equipment.

Typical applications include:

  • Placer gold recovery
  • Alluvial gold processing
  • River sand gold recovery
  • Fine gold recovery from sluice tailings
  • Secondary concentration of heavy mineral sands

2. Hard Rock Gold Gravity Recovery

In hard rock gold plants, the concentrator can be installed around the grinding and classification circuit to recover liberated free gold at an early stage. Recovering gravity-recoverable gold before further processing can reduce the amount of valuable metal reporting to downstream streams.

Typical installation points include:

  • Ball mill discharge
  • Cyclone feed
  • Cyclone underflow
  • Grinding circuit
  • Gravity concentration circuit
  • Flotation feed or concentrate treatment

Modern centrifugal concentrators are widely used within grinding circuits because they can selectively recover a small mass of high-grade heavy-mineral concentrate.

3. Tailings and Secondary Recovery

For existing gold plants, a centrifugal gravity concentrator can be used as a scavenging unit to recover fine gold from historical tailings, gravity tails or other low-grade streams.

This makes it suitable for tailings reprocessing, gold recovery optimization and gravity circuit upgrades, especially where valuable fine particles remain in the plant discharge.

4. Other Heavy Minerals

The technology is not limited to gold. Depending on the equipment configuration and mineral liberation characteristics, centrifugal gravity concentration can also be applied to tin, tantalum, tungsten, chrome, cobalt, iron and other high-density minerals. Continuous centrifugal concentrators are particularly useful where a higher mass yield of concentrate is required.

Batch and Continuous Discharge Options

Different mineral processing circuits require different concentrate discharge methods. The equipment can therefore be configured as a Batch Centrifugal Concentrator or Continuous Discharge Centrifugal Concentrator according to the required recovery process.

Batch Centrifugal Concentrator

The batch type continuously receives feed during the concentration cycle while valuable heavy minerals accumulate in the bowl's concentration zone. After a preset operating period, feed is stopped and the retained concentrate is discharged during a rinse cycle.

This configuration is especially suitable for:

  • Free gold recovery
  • High concentration-ratio applications
  • Grinding circuit gravity recovery
  • Small and medium-scale gold plants
  • Placer gold processing

Continuous Discharge Centrifugal Concentrator

Continuous-discharge models are designed for applications requiring uninterrupted concentrate production and higher mass yields. They are suitable for heavy mineral concentration, scavenging circuits and industrial mineral recovery.

The correct configuration should be selected according to feed rate, mineral density, particle size distribution, liberation characteristics, required concentrate mass yield and downstream process requirements.

Key Advantages

High-G Enhanced Gravity Separation

High centrifugal force significantly increases the effective separation force compared with conventional gravity concentration. Commercial enhanced-gravity equipment can operate across a broad G-force range depending on the model and application.

Excellent Fine Gold Recovery Potential

The centrifugal field helps recover fine liberated gold and other dense minerals that may be difficult to capture using conventional low-G equipment. Actual recovery depends on mineral liberation, particle size, feed density, bowl configuration and operating parameters.

Chemical-Free Gravity Concentration

The separation process is based on physical density differences rather than chemical reagents. No mercury or cyanide is required for the gravity concentration stage, making the equipment suitable for environmentally conscious mineral processing circuits.

Low Mass Yield and High Concentration Ratio

Batch centrifugal concentrators can produce a relatively small quantity of high-grade concentrate from a much larger feed stream. This reduces the volume of material requiring downstream cleaning and upgrading.

Flexible Plant Integration

The concentrator can be integrated with trommel screens, vibrating screens, hydrocyclones, pumps, ball mills, flotation circuits, shaking tables and other mineral processing equipment to form a complete gravity recovery circuit.

Actual capacity and recovery performance should always be confirmed through mineralogical testing and equipment selection. Published commercial equipment data show that capacity, G-force, water consumption and particle-size capability vary considerably between concentrator designs.

How to Select the Right Centrifugal Concentrator

Before requesting a quotation, customers should provide the following information:

  • Required processing capacity in t/h
  • Gold or target mineral type
  • Feed particle size
  • Feed solids concentration
  • Head grade or estimated mineral content
  • Expected mineral liberation size
  • Existing equipment in the gravity circuit
  • Required batch or continuous discharge
  • Available process-water pressure and flow
  • Power supply
  • Desired automation level

For gold projects, representative ore samples or laboratory test results can further improve equipment selection and process design. Recovery should not be guaranteed from equipment specifications alone because ore mineralogy and liberation characteristics strongly affect actual metallurgical performance.
