Quartz: The cornerstone of industrial applications
Quartz (SiO₂) has become a strategic resource in the fields of glass, semiconductors, photovoltaics, etc. due to its diverse origins, high temperature resistance, chemical stability and other characteristics. The following 7 types of industrial quartz minerals are divided according to their geological origins and application value:
Geological origin: Granite pegmatite/hydrothermal veins dominate, Donghai, Jiangsu, China is a world-renowned production area.
Characteristics: Colorless and transparent crystal, rare reserves.
Application: Handicrafts, optical lenses, piezoelectric sensors (limited mining conditions).
Distribution: Hainan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places.
2. Vein Quartz
Geological Origin: Vein ore bodies formed by hydrothermal action of granite.
Characteristics: Dense block, SiO₂>98%, easy to mine.
Application: High-purity quartz sand → silicon micropowder/artificial quartz plate/metal silicon smelting.
Advantages: Purity and physical properties are among the best of industrial quartz.
3. Quartzite
Geological origin: Quartz sandstone is formed by regional metamorphism.
Characteristics: high hardness, difficult to purify, rich in Anhui and Qinghai, China.
Application: core raw material for metal silicon smelting.
Geological origin: siliceous clastic rock is cemented and solidified.
Characteristics: quartz content>95%, rich resources in Sichuan and Shandong.
Application: glass, ceramic raw materials (not suitable for casting/oil fracturing proppant).
Characteristics: natural powder state, extremely fine particles, high SiO₂ content.
Distribution: Jiangxi, Chongqing, Guizhou, China.
Application: ceramics/insulating materials/rubber fillers (unique form expands emerging scenarios).
Geological origin: long-term weathering product of granite/quartzite.
Distribution: Inner Mongolia, Shandong (low quality in the north and high quality in the south).
Application: The best choice for foundry sand/3D printing sand/petroleum fracturing proppant.
VII. Granite Quartz
Geological Origin: Quartz in granite pegmatite (accounting for ~30%).
Characteristics: coarse crystals and extremely low impurities (such as the Spruce Pine deposit in the United States).
Application: High-purity quartz core raw material, supporting the semiconductor industry.

China is rich in quartz resources, but high-purity quartz is imported (such as American granite quartz). With the upgrading of purification technology, the application of vein quartz and granite quartz in semiconductor and photovoltaic fields will reshape the supply chain; the nano-scale characteristics of powder quartz create new scenarios for polymer composite materials. Understanding the differences in geological causes is the key to optimizing resource development and technology transformation.
