Huatao Group-Vibrating Screen Technology Solution and Service for Quarry & Mining Industry Since 2008.
HUATAO Spiral Chute is a gravity concentration equipment designed for the wet separation and recovery of fine-grained and heavy minerals. Also known as a Spiral Concentrator, Spiral Separator, Gravity Spiral Chute or Spiral Chute Separator, it uses the combined effects of gravity, centrifugal force, fluid resistance and slurry flow to separate minerals according to differences in specific gravity and particle characteristics.
With no complex moving mechanism, the spiral chute provides a simple and continuous solution for mineral concentration. It is widely used in mineral processing plants, placer mining operations, mineral sand plants and ore beneficiation circuits where valuable minerals have a sufficient density difference from gangue.
The spiral chute is particularly suitable for fine mineral particles. Typical feed ranges depend on spiral diameter, pitch, mineral characteristics and operating conditions. Common spiral concentrator designs are used for particles from approximately 0.02–0.30 mm, while some models can accommodate a wider feed size range. Proper feed preparation and test work are recommended before final equipment selection.
The slurry is evenly distributed through the feed distributor and enters the upper section of the spiral chute. As the pulp flows continuously downward along the helical surface, gravity, centrifugal force, fluid drag and friction cause particles to stratify according to density and size.
Heavier and higher-density mineral particles tend to move toward the inner part of the spiral flow, while lighter gangue particles are carried toward the outer section. The continuous spiral flow forms different mineral bands along the chute. Adjustable splitters at the discharge section can then divide the flow into concentrate, middlings and tailings.
This gravity separation process does not require complicated mechanical movement inside the spiral body. As a result, the equipment can operate continuously with a simple structure and relatively low maintenance requirements.
For applications where the feed contains valuable heavy minerals such as iron ore, chromite, zircon, rutile or gold, the splitter position and operating conditions can be adjusted according to the required recovery and concentrate grade. For demanding projects, laboratory or pilot-scale testing can be used to determine the optimum spiral configuration and process parameters.
HUATAO Spiral Chute can be incorporated into roughing, scavenging and cleaning circuits depending on the ore characteristics and required recovery. Its compact vertical configuration makes it suitable for both standalone installations and multi-spiral banks.
Spiral chutes can be used for the gravity concentration of alluvial and placer gold ores after appropriate screening and classification. They are suitable for recovering free heavy minerals from sand and slurry streams and can be used as part of a gravity gold recovery circuit.
Spiral concentrators are widely applied in iron ore beneficiation, particularly for separating heavy iron-bearing minerals from lighter gangue. They can be used for concentration, scavenging and upgrading applications and are also suitable for selected tailings reprocessing projects.
For beach sand, river sand and mineral sand processing, spiral separators can be used to concentrate heavy minerals such as zircon, rutile, ilmenite and monazite. Multiple spiral units can be arranged into banks to increase processing capacity while maintaining a relatively small installation footprint.
Because these ores can contain valuable minerals with significantly higher specific gravity than associated gangue, spiral gravity separation can be used for pre-concentration and upgrading. Typical applications include tin ore, tungsten ore and tantalum-niobium ore beneficiation.
Spiral chutes are also used for chromite, ilmenite and other heavy mineral separation where density differences provide a suitable basis for gravity concentration.
The final application and performance depend on feed mineralogy, liberation size, particle-size distribution, pulp density, slurry flow rate and required concentrate grade.
The spiral chute is manufactured using a lightweight fiberglass reinforced plastic structure with a wear-resistant polyurethane lining. This construction combines low structural weight with resistance to abrasion, moisture and corrosion.
The polyurethane-lined working surface is designed to withstand continuous contact with abrasive mineral slurry. Compared with conventional metal structures, the FRP and polyurethane construction helps reduce corrosion-related maintenance and makes installation and handling easier.
Depending on project requirements, the spiral chute can be supplied with feed distributors, support structures, product collection boxes and adjustable splitters. Multi-start configurations can also be arranged into spiral concentrator banks for higher throughput.
1. Efficient gravity separation
Separates minerals based on differences in specific gravity without requiring complex mechanical movement.
2. Suitable for fine mineral particles
Designed for fine-grained heavy minerals commonly encountered in mineral processing and mineral sand applications.
3. Wear-resistant polyurethane surface
Polyurethane lining provides strong resistance to abrasive slurry and supports long service life.
4. Lightweight FRP structure
Fiberglass construction reduces equipment weight and provides good resistance to moisture and corrosion.
5. Compact installation
The vertical spiral configuration provides high processing capacity within a relatively small plant footprint.
6. Simple operation and maintenance
The static gravity separation design has few moving components, helping reduce routine maintenance requirements.
7. Flexible product separation
Adjustable splitters allow operators to control concentrate, middlings and tailings discharge.
8. Modular configuration
Individual spiral starts can be combined into multi-start columns or spiral banks according to plant capacity.
9. Low operating requirements
The gravity-based separation process does not require a mechanical drive system for the spiral itself, helping simplify the process circuit.
10. Broad mineral applications
Suitable for gold, iron ore, chromite, tin, tungsten, zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite and other heavy minerals.

Actual capacity and operating parameters vary according to spiral diameter, pitch, number of starts, feed size, pulp density, mineral composition and separation requirements. HUATAO can recommend a suitable configuration based on your feed material and target capacity.
HUATAO supplies mineral processing and mining equipment designed for practical plant applications. For spiral chute projects, we focus on equipment configuration, wear resistance, feed distribution and integration with the customer's existing beneficiation process.
Our spiral concentrator solutions can be customized according to mineral type, feed particle size, processing capacity, installation space and required separation stages. For larger projects, multiple spiral separators can be arranged in parallel to form a complete gravity separation circuit.
Before purchasing, customers should provide the ore type, laboratory test results if available, feed particle-size distribution, feed capacity, pulp density and target recovery or concentrate grade. These parameters help determine the appropriate spiral diameter, pitch, number of starts and circuit configuration.
