A magnetic separator attracts materials according to their magnetic properties. Not every material containing iron is strongly magnetic, and not every metal responds to a magnet in the same way. 🔍
Magnetite: A strongly magnetic iron mineral commonly recovered in iron ore processing.
Ferrous metal fragments: Iron and many steel particles can be captured by suitable magnetic equipment.
Some iron-bearing minerals: Hematite, ilmenite and other minerals may respond to magnetic fields, but their response depends on mineral composition, field intensity and separator design.
Weakly magnetic impurities: Certain iron-bearing minerals require high-intensity or high-gradient separation.
Quartz, silica sand and many silicate minerals are generally weakly responsive under ordinary magnetic separation conditions. Copper, aluminum and many other non-ferrous metals are not reliably captured by conventional magnetic separators.
However, the term iron-bearing does not automatically mean strongly magnetic. For example, hematite generally responds less strongly than magnetite. Equipment that effectively captures magnetite may not remove all hematite or other weakly magnetic impurities.
Start with mineral identification rather than simply checking total iron content. Laboratory magnetic separation tests can help determine whether the target impurity is strongly magnetic or requires a higher field intensity.
For silica sand, glass raw materials or ceramic minerals, the key question is whether the iron occurs as discrete magnetic particles, weakly magnetic minerals, or iron coatings on other grains. These forms can behave differently during separation.
A practical test should compare feed and product iron content, mass yield and recovery under representative operating conditions. If iron remains high after magnetic treatment, further mineralogical analysis may be needed.
