Edge cracking in polyurethane screen panels is rarely caused by a single factor. It typically results from a combination of installation stress, mechanical fatigue, material impact, and the inherent properties of the material itself. The edge is the critical load-bearing zone where the panel connects to the equipment—and it is also the weakest link.
1. Installation and Tensioning Problems (Most Common)
Under-tensioning: Panel loosens and repeatedly slaps against support rails → fatigue fracture at edges
Over-tensioning: Removes elasticity → edge hooks tear from over-stretching
How to check: Look for shiny wear marks on panel hooks or edges
2. Support Structure Problems
Worn or bent support rails: Panel cannot sit flat → unsupported spans → abnormal bending stress
Aged or missing buffer rubber: Direct metal contact → cracks appear quickly
3. Feed Impact and Material Factors
Direct impact: Excessive drop height + large lumps → impact force exceeds polyurethane limit
Material characteristics: Sharp, heavy materials → increased impact and abrasion
4. Material Aging and Quality Issues
Environmental aging: UV, ozone, extreme temperatures → brittleness and reduced elasticity
Manufacturing defects: Poor bonding between steel hook and polyurethane → fatigue failure
Standardize installation: Calibrated tensioning tools; star-pattern tightening sequence; re-check tension within 24 hours
Maintain the support system: Inspect support rails for straightness; check buffer rubber for integrity; replace worn rails and hardened rubber
Optimize feed conditions: Install buffer hopper or wear-resistant rubber liner at feed end
Select the right panel: Shore A 85–90 for large lumps; softer compounds for fine wet material
Store properly: Cool, dry, dark area; avoid stacking heavy items
Edge cracking in polyurethane screen panels is preventable. Most failures trace back to installation tensioning and support structure condition—both of which are within your control. By following the prevention checklist, you can extend panel life, reduce downtime, and improve screening efficiency.
